September is National Square Dance Month.  The traditional square dance known widely across the United States has its roots in 17th and 18th century Europe.   English country dances, French quadrilles and Scandinavian, Spanish and Scottish folk dances were all major contributors.  The distinctive country fiddle and caller were added when the dances were performed in 19th century Appalachia. 

This exhibit contains resources on Traditional Square Dance (pre-1950), Modern Western Square Dance (which evolved from Traditional), online square dance lessons, terminology used by callers and early forms of European and French square dancing.  Much of the music chosen for the playlists are common Traditional Square Dance songs, some with calls.  Some are lively instrumentals to which calls and square dance steps can easily be added.
